چکیده

A finite element model of a total hip replacement (THR) has been developed from the approach of modal analysis. The model is capable of determining the first 15 Eigenmodes of a THR with an artificial bone model. The model was equipped with several different defects to simulate a loosening of THR and to enforce a shifting of the frequency spectrum of the system’s Eigenfrequencies. Using the preliminary findings from the shifting of the frequency spectrum a classification of defects is to be created to get knowledge and experience of the level of loosening.

Finite Element Analysis of Different Hip Implant Designs along with Femur under Static Loading Conditions

Background: The hip joint is the largest joint after the knee, which gives stability to the whole human structure. The hip joint consists of a femoral head which articulates with the acetabulum. Due to age and wear between the joints, these joints need to be replaced with implants which can function just as a natural joint. Since the early 19th century, the hip joint arthroplasty has evolved, a...

Effect of Coating Materials on the Fatigue Behavior of Hip Implants: A Three-dimensional Finite Element Analysis

This study aims to validate, using finite element analysis (FEA), the design concept by comparing the fatigue behavior of hip implant stems coated with composite (carbon/PEEK) and polymeric (PEEK) coating materials corresponding to different human activities: standing up, normal walking and climbing stairs under dynamic loadings to find out which of all these models have a better performance in...

In vitro assessment of Function Graded (FG) artificial Hip joint stem in terms of bone/cement stresses: 3D Finite Element (FE) study

BACKGROUND Stress shielding in the cemented hip prosthesis occurs due to the mismatching in the mechanical properties of metallic stem and bone. This mismatching in properties is considered as one of the main reasons for implant loosening. Therefore, a new stem material in orthopedic surgery is still required. In the present study, 3D finite element modeling is used for evaluating the artificia...

Total Hip Replacement Revision in a Single Brand Small Cementless Stem – Our Experience after the Findings of the National Joint Registry

Background: Cementless total hip replacement is the common THR performed in England, Wales, Northern Irelandand the Isle of Man. The Corail stem is the most popular cementless implant and has a ODEP 10A rating. Review ofits performance in the registry identified an increase rate of revision amongst the smaller stem sizes. However, claritywas not provided on the explanation for this finding. We ...
